IMPROVING THE INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM
“Every child, every person needs to know that they are a source of joy;
every child, every person, needs to be celebrated.
Only when all of our weaknesses are accepted as part of our humanity can our negative,
broken self-images be transformed.”

REFLECTIONThe administrative team is responsible for creating conditions for student success and is accountable to many stakeholders for ensuring that students benefit from a high quality Catholic education.
The current trend in planning is to be collaborative and one needs to trust those they work with. It is the administrator’s responsibility to foster relationships and build a level of trust between staff. I think that it is important to engage in a collaborative approach with your staff through distributive leadership. During a PQP course, I delivered a presentation on 21st century learning and technology. Personally, I am fortunate that the experience of a learner in the 21st century has been a lived experience for some of my formal education whereas for others it is learned. My educational experience framed a perspective that recognizes how creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills are all embedded in our Catholic Graduate Expectations. I strive to be accountable to students, staff and my parish community through clear communication. I will utilize all the resources and mediums that are at my disposal to ensure that I am accessible to all. The assessment, evaluation and reporting of student achievement is an integral component of effective instruction. I believe the pillar of instructional leadership is the most important to any school! As a teacher, I believe that this is an area that I have the most experience with. Assessment should always direct a deeper understanding of concepts and be used as a means to provide meaningful feedback to students to improve future learning. I am reminded of PD sessions that I have attended in the past where schools were represented not only by teaching staff but also administration. As an administrator, I would aim to attended PD sessions with my staff, where applicable, to reinforce the importance of this pillar. I would also aim to coordinate common planning time and make it a point to help teachers that are struggling to follow the school effectiveness framework. It is critical to be knowledgeable in curriculum, pedagogy and best practices. It is also important to be flexible and to continue to engage in professional learning as an administrator. |
