DEVELOPING THE ORGANIZATION TO SUPPORT DESIRED PRACTICES

"All humans are sacred, whatever their culture, race, or religion, whatever their capacities or incapacities,
and whatever their weaknesses or strengths may be.

Each of us has an instrument to bring to the vast orchestra of humanity,
and each of us needs help to become all that we might be."
Jean Vanier, Becoming Human

REFLECTION

As a faith leader in a Catholic school, God is calling us to serve.  It is a vocation that directs how we interact with the staff and students that we are entrusted to serve.  It requires passion and commitment throughout the school community.  It does not begin and end at the sound of a bell. There is never a job to big or small for a faith leader.  It calls for staff and students to be treated with respect and dignity.  Where children have names and staffs are treated professionally.  It is one of the many goals of the administrator to set a direction that is inclusive where everyone feels equal and valued.

The character of the Catholic school community is a direct reflection of the leadership provided by the principal. The administrative team is accountable for the goals set out in the school improvement plan and for creating an organizational structure which reflects the school’s Catholic values and enables the management systems, structures and processes to work effectively in line with legal requirements.

As a vice principal, in collaboration with the principal and Catholic School Learning Team we co-construct theories of action and develop plans to support our desired practices.  A school requires a passionate leader to set forth a clear direction but it also requires a committed staff to share that vision and to work collectively.

I think faith development needs to be a priority in a school.  I think it is important for not only the students but for the adults in their ongoing faith formation and affirmation.  I am a Eucharistic minister and I make it clear to students the transformation that is undergone when the bread is blessed and transformed into the body of Christ.  I am involved in various community efforts as a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
